How Do I Check and Change Out My Vehicle’s Transmission Fluid Level?

Your transmission is one of the most necessary—and most delicate—systems in your car. Taking care of it with proper maintenance is essential to making sure your car continues to run and doesn’t leave you out in the cold. Read on to learn how to check your fluid levels, how to change your levels, and why you should choose AutoMax Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram for service if you live near Oklahoma City or Tulsa.

Signs Your Transmission Fluid May Be Running Low

If your transmission is experiencing problems, it may be due to low fluid levels. Some symptoms of low transmission fluid levels include:

  • Hesitation
  • Failure to Change Gears
  • Increased Temperature or Overheating
  • Grinding or Noise

Luckily, there is an easy way to check for low fluid, and add more, if your car needs it.

How to Check and Replace the Transmission Fluid

Even with little or no automotive experience, you can check your transmission fluid, and replace lost fluid, in a few easy steps:

  1. Park on a Flat Surface. Make sure your car is level and warmed up.

  1. Find Your Owners Manual. This will show where the dipstick is and what kind of transmission fluid your car needs.
  1. Locate the Dipstick. This metal rod that fits into the transmission and shows the fill level.
  1. Check the Fluid. Pull the dipstick out and check to see if the fluid is dark or smells burned. Rub a little between your fingers and look for metal flakes.
  1. Check the Level. Use a lint-free cloth to clean the dipstick and replace it, pulling it out again to check the fluid level. If it is below the Fullline, add more.
  1. Replace the Fluid. Insert a long funnel into the dipstick hole and add fluid in small increments, being careful not to overfill it.
  1. Replace the Dipstick. When the right fluid level is achieved, replace the dipstick.
